The Pros of Acreage Living

Following my last post that covered things to consider when buying an acreage property, which listed some considerations to make before making the leap, this post covers the pros of acreage living.

Take it from a guy who has lived this lifestyle for the past 20 years or so, my wife and I would not trade back for “City Slicker” living for all the TEA in China!

If you are looking for a custom-built acreage home in Calgary, Alberta and the surrounding areas, look no further than Landen Design Build.

Now let’s get into the pros of acreage living:

1. More Space

You can build a much more spread-out home plan where you are not right up against your property boundary, compared to city living where there is literally only a few feet between you and your neighbour.

2. Unlimited Design/Layout Possibilities

You are not limited in floor plan design and layout like you are on small city building lots, where new city bungalow floor plans are now a thing of the past!

3. Room to park your vehicles and RV

It’s nice having the room to have that extra garage parking space, for say 3-4 or more auto’s

You will have plenty of room to park your RV without any neighbours complaining, or a by-law officer handing out a ticket for parking your RV in front of your home.

You will have lots of room to add a separate outbuilding such as the perfect Man-Cave shop

3. Enjoy some privacy

Privacy, privacy and more privacy!  You don’t have to worry about playing music too loud, or worry about peeping Tom’s looking in your window, as your nearest neighbour will be WAY further away than they would in the city slicker neighbourhood!

4. Dog owners Paradise!

Your dog or DOG’s will love it on an acreage, I know in our case our two dogs live in dog paradise!

5. See the wildlife on your doorstep

Wildlife will be right outside your window!  We have on numerous occasions had a whole herd of elk, or deer being right in our backyard, there are also way more birds and other wild things that come to pay a visit than in the city, it is really something to see!

6. Relaxing quiet

Peace and quiet!  The one big thing you will notice is the silence in the country; there is no city Hummmmm or other city noises such as police and fire truck sirens in the background!  The only noise’s come from Mother Nature, such as frogs bellowing after a good rain, or crickets chirping at night.

7. Livestock and Horses

In some cases, you can also have livestock or horses right on your property (depending on the size of your acreage and local by-laws.

8. See the Stars!

STARS!  The night sky in the country has no comparison to the City where there is virtually no night sky to see!  There is many a summer night where my wife and I simply spread out a blanket with a bottle of wine and just spend time looking at God’s wondrous universe!

9. No Complaints from the neighbours

No complaining neighbours!  When we lived in the city, the neighbours complained about everything, the dog barking too loud, my table saw running in my garage on a Sunday, my sidewalk not being shovelled soon enough, or even the smoke from our BBQ drifting into the neighbours “airspace”.

The neighbour calling the by-law officer because we had our motor home parked on “our driveway” getting ready for a long weekend trip, and then getting a $175 ticket for it!  I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea!

Since we moved to the country we have not had a single neighbour complaint, in fact, I find neighbours in the country are totally different from city neighbours, in the country; they actually want to get to know you!

10. The country fire pit

Then there’s the country fire pit!  There is something about having a fire in your acreage yard that just makes country living feel like your camping “year-round”!

11. Beautiful Gardens and the ability to grow food

Gardens!  Acreage land is where you can create the gardens of gardens; in our case, my wife grows a huge garden every year, about 50 ft. wide by 150 ft. long.  She grows so much stuff that we end up giving more than half of it away to families that need help!

12. Great-Tasting Water

The water!  In my personal opinion, and in most cases country water from a well is heather to drink than city water, however, you may need to add filter systems to your water source (see also well water quality testing).  Now, whenever I have a glass of “City-water” at someone’s home I really notice the difference in taste, in our case, it is like drinking “bottled spring water” every day for FREE!

Country Lifestyle may not be for everyone

Before you make the big leap to country acreage living you first need to ask yourself “What did you think it would be like when you move somewhere that everything is now miles away”! It’s all about preparation and knowing what you are about to get into with rural property.  And being very honest with yourself and ask “is country living really for me”?
